Have Some Fun

The wedding is just one part of being married. It is just the process of making your union legal and in the religious sense, getting the blessing of your God and announcing your oneness to your community. It is also about becoming part of a new family and making your own. It is about creating new bonds and strengthening your existing ties. Weddings are a perfect time to have some good old fashioned fun.

It is always a great idea to give yourself time before the wedding to just take 5 and have a good time being with everyone. When was the last time you and your family went out for dinner and a movie? Why not find a flick that all of you can enjoy.

How about a game of cranium? This is one game that everybody should play. It is fast, fun and just plain crazy sometimes. There are so many editions of this game that you’ll never feel you’ve memorized all the answers. It also allows your older relatives to be like kids again and is a great way to get to know each other better. You might be amazed at how well your future mother in law acts out cabaret.

Of course, you can always have a game of cards. Go Fish, Gin Rummy, Bridge, Poker or even just a quick game of old maid with M&M’s as payment. Dads are notorious for acing card games and fleecing everyone of their chips (or candies) though they will normally let everyone have the candies back.

Keep in mind to go slow on nibbling the goodies. Your wedding is coming up after all and you don’t want to have dress problems if you gain weight after the dress has become a perfect fit already.

How about karaoke or videoke night? Be like Cameron Diaz in My Best Friends Wedding and just let your hair down. Sing away any wedding jitters that you may be feeling. Some places will even record your performances and you can bring home your own CD as a souvenir. If you hit a sour note or two, who cares? Go out and have fun!

A barbecue is always a great thing to do. Fire up the grill and bring out the burgers, hotdogs and treats. Let the boys handle cooking for the family. You can mingle with everyone and enjoy your fiance or dad or maybe father-in-law’s skill. Add a pool and you get a wonderfully cool party! Any kids present will want to jump right in. Watch out for the splash!

It pays to have relaxed moments like these with your families together. It builds ties between your families that are very important, expecially if you are both from close knit families. You can have a great time, forget your wedding worries for a day and get to spend time with your loved ones all at the same time. What could be better? After all, this is the way it should be even after you’re married. You’ll all be one big happy family.
